Bismantin contains Bismuth Subcitrate and is manufactured by Ahran Tejarat Company, supplied in packs of 40 tablets. This compound belongs to the gastrointestinal drug class, specifically antiulcer and local antibacterial agents for the digestive system.
The mechanism of action of bismuth subcitrate involves forming a protective coating on the gastric mucosa and inhibiting the adhesion and activity of Helicobacter pylori. Therefore, it is often prescribed in combination with antibiotics (such as tetracycline and metronidazole) and a proton pump inhibitor (e.g., omeprazole) for the eradication of H. pylori infection. This medication aids in healing gastric and duodenal ulcers and reducing gastric mucosal inflammation.
Indications: Treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers, eradication of H. pylori infection, relief of gastritis symptoms, and, in certain protocols, supportive management of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms.
Contraindications include hypersensitivity to bismuth compounds, severe renal impairment, and concurrent use of other bismuth-containing products.
Common and notable side effects are generally mild and reversible, including temporary darkening of the tongue and stool, nausea, or constipation. It is recommended that the medication be taken as directed by a physician, preferably with meals or as scheduled (about 30 minutes before food), and that the full course of therapy be completed to ensure complete bacterial eradication.
