Bilodiol (generic name: Ursodeoxycholic Acid) is a bile acid derivative and hepatoprotective agent used in the treatment of biliary disorders and chronic liver diseases. It is manufactured by Ahran Tejarat Company and classified under bile therapy agents, which act on bile flow and liver function.
The mechanism of action of ursodeoxycholic acid is based on reducing hepatic cholesterol secretion and inhibiting its intestinal absorption, which leads to a decrease in biliary cholesterol and the gradual dissolution of cholesterol gallstones. Additionally, by replacing toxic bile acids, it protects hepatocytes from damage, thereby improving liver function and enhancing bile secretion.
Indications include the treatment of small, non-calcified cholesterol gallstones, chronic liver diseases such as primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), biliary flow disorders, and prevention of gallstone recurrence. In some patients, it also helps reduce pruritus (itching) and alleviate symptoms associated with cholestasis.
Contraindications include patients with calcified or non-cholesterol gallstones, complete biliary obstruction, acute cholecystitis, and hypersensitivity to the drug’s components. The medication should be used under medical supervision, with the dosage adjusted according to the patient’s hepatic and biliary condition.
